On my way from siem reap to battambang, for kilometres now, the air has been heavy with the burning smell of torched field s. People are preparing for the new planting season. The rice stumps are burnt to refertilize the soil and sterilise it. But this practice also kills microorganisms and beneficial insects and small animals in the land. And the smell of burnt fields gets in the lungs and eyes for days. I've been in it for half an hour now in an air con car and it's already aggravating my breathing.

At the same time, in Malaysia, there's been a heatwave sweeping through vast parts of the country, and I can't help but wonder if the two are connected. Surely the carbon dioxide and monoxide and soot that builds in the air flows and traps heat elsewhere.

The reflection reminds me why the bsf is a vital part of the equation to rebalance our environment and works towards greater sustainability. We all have to do our part.
